Carmen DeLeon on her new single "Cafecito"
The world first heard your name on The Voice in Spain, but how did you begin making music? What got you started?
I started singing when I was four years of age! I was a little girl with a big dream. My dad put me in singing lessons when I was six years old and since then, music has always been my passion. I started writing my own music at twelve years old. Every time I felt some type of emotion, I would write it down and make it into a song. I just wouldn’t show anybody because I was shy.
Who are your greatest musical influences? Who do you like to listen to when you’re not writing your own music?
I love listening to Jessie J, Camilo, J Balvin, and Aretha Franklin.
Your new single, Cafecito, reflects on special memories and images with your grandfathers.
How has your family and your upbringing impacted your musical journey?
Everything that I write comes from my heart. The day I wrote Cafecito was very emotionally intense. Writing about two people that passed away and making it a little more upbeat was definitely a challenge but I’m so proud of how it came out.
How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted your music-making? Has the process changed at all in the last year?
Covid never impacted my process! I would say it just helped me write more because I was stuck at home. Every day inspired a song.
All of your songs have totally different subject matter and cover a wide range of emotions, yet all of them are so upbeat and have such a happy vibe. How do you manage to bring so much joy into all of your music?
I love music that can make you dance, but at the same time I want to focus on my songs having very passionate lyrics.
What advice do you have for other young artists who perhaps are struggling with adversity or aren’t sure where to start?
I would say never give up on your dreams, because everything is possible.
What can your fans and listeners expect to see from you next?
A lot of great music and lyrics, and hopefully soon, live performances. I can’t wait!
At only 19, Miami-based artist Carmen DeLeon is nothing short of electric. DeLeon’s single “Cafecito,” released January 29, 2021, is a beautiful tribute to her late grandfathers, and especially poignant as the globalization of the COVID-19 pandemic approaches its one-year anniversary. DeLeon balances a soft, upbeat pop sound with her gentle take on difficult emotions, capturing beloved memories with late relatives through her heartfelt lyricism. The video for “Cafecito” is highly nostalgic and shows the stories behind DeLeon’s vulnerability in a beautiful light. She expertly portrays the wide range of emotions associated with grief in a minimalistic, yet incredibly tangible, way. On top of it all, DeLeon has a spectacular voice-- much like the morning coffee that she describes in the single, her voice is rich with control and maturity far beyond her years.
